2017-11-14

The Valencian riders Cristina Martínez and Sandra Alonso will also ride in the 2018 season for the Bizkaia Durango-Euskadi Murias UCI Women’s Team, whose roster is already composed by eight riders.

Cristina Martínez (Torrent, Valencia, 1996), who raced for the also Basque team Lointek in 2016, has achieved good results in the international field, such as the victory in the young classification at 2015 Emakumeen Bira, or two top-20 positions in UCI races held in France. She has been selected by the Spanish national team in several ocasions — she raced the 2014 Junior World Championship in Ponferrada and the 2015 U23 European Championship in Tartu. Also, she’s the current points race national champion — a title she got ahead of Ane Iriarte, who will also be a Bizkaia Durango-Euskadi Murias rider in 2018.

2018 will be my fourth season in a Basque team and I’m very proud for signing with Bizkaia Durango-Euskadi Murias, a team that has proved to be a very strong squad in the last years. We have been in touch for some months, speaking about the possibility of signing with the team, and  I’m very thankful for that, as it’s always positive to be followed during the season. I hope to perform at a very high level and give the best I have, as I’m really looking forward to enjoying competition and training. I believe we will be a great group and I’m positive we will work together, giving it all for our teammates and contributing to the whole team.”

The other incorporation will be Sandra Alonso’s (Torrevieja, Alacant, 1998), a rider who will face her second season as an U23 rider. She achieved a great eight place at the 2016 Junior World Championship, in Doha, and she was also eight in 2017 at the third stage of the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana, a 2.2 UCI race she compited in with the Spanish national team. This season she also raced the U23 European Championship, in Herning. On the track she won the Individual Persecution National Championship one month ago.

I think my debut in the U23 category has been a good one and that’s why I hope to move a step forward in 2018, in a team like Bizkaia Durango-Euskadi Murias that has gotten so many great results in the last seasons. My objective is to keep on progressing and, of course, that we can work properly as a team, knowing when is each one of us in a better shape in each race, and when we can shine. I’d also like to get more international experience and that’s why I believe that moving to Bizkaia Durango-Euskadi Murias, a team with a large international calendar, will be good for me to keep on growing as a cyclist.”
