Bizkaia Durango-Euskadi Murias makes it to the podium at Setmana Valenciana

2018-02-25

The Bizkaia Durango-Euskadi Murias UCI Women’s Team has won the best Valencian rider prize awarded at Setmana Valenciana (2.2 UCI) thanks to Cristina Martínez. The Basque team also achieved a top-15 spot in two stages, as Dani Christmas ended up in 13th place the first day of competition and was 12th in the last stage.

Despite the continuous attempts to be in breakaways, there was no success during the whole stage race for the Bizkaia Durango-Euskadi Murias UCI Women’s Team. In the last stage, the British rider Dani Christmas raced always in the chasing group, just behind the nine leaders who fought for the stage win. Eventually, she was 12th in the finish line and her teammate Cristina Martínez won the best Valencian rider award.

Statements from Dani Christmas, 16th overall: “Today was a super hard day. We knew it was going to be like that, as it was the last stage and probably the hardest stage - on paper. Everyone was going to go full gas from the start and a small group was formed with just a few kilometers done. I’ve been trying to do the best I could, but it was super hard. I managed to stay in the second group of the race, so not too different from my place in the general classification. I could have won the bunch sprint but there was a policeman on the road, but anyway I think we have done a great race, which was my first competition in Spain and with my new team.”

Statements from Cristina Martínez, best Valencian rider: “It’s been a restless race as I haven’t been able to follow the pace in the first lap. I haven’t been strong enough to be in the first bunch, so I’ve been all the stage waiting for my chance. In the last lap I’ve suffered a lot, but I’m happy I could win the best Valencian rider jersey. First race of the season and I’m already very grateful to the team, as they have taken great care of me.”
