Dani Christmas is caught with 500 meters to go in Westhoek

2018-03-04

Just 500 meters made the difference at Omloop van de Westhoek (1.2 UCI), the first classic race for the Bizkaia Durango-Euskadi Murias UCI Women’s Team this season. Dani Christmas was caught by the bunch with half a kilometer to go when she was in a solo chasing group just behind the final winner Floortje Mackaij (SUN).

During the whole race the British rider fought in the main favorites’ group, as well as her teammate Lucía González, who ended up the race in 23rd place.

At 5 kilometers from the finish line the attacks started. Mackaij was the first rider to attempt a breakaway and Sofie De Vuyst (DVE) tried to follow her wheel — but she couldn’t. Behind De Vuyst, Dani Christmas tried to join Mackaij too, and she stayed around 3 kilometers chasing Mackaij. Christmas attacked again within the last kilometer of the race, but she was caught by the bunch with only 500 meters to go.

Quotes from Dani Christmas after Omloop van de Westhoek: “It was a hectic race with so many cobbled sections! I was always fighting to be at the front. It was hard all the time, but I tried in a breakaway with De Vuyst with 5 kilometers to go, but she stopped, so I went after Mackaij alone. I tried, but I’m a little dissapointed for having been caught and not being able to be on the podium. We’ll try next time again!
