Lizzie Holden shines at Setmana Valenciana stage 3

2020-02-19

British rider Lizzie Holden (Bizkaia-Diurango) took the second place at the Setmana Valenciana stage 3, València > Sagunt, covering 96 kilometres. The rider from Man was today’s main protagonist, as she was in a breakaway which lasted for over 50 kilometres. Lizbeth Salazar (ASA), who took the win, and Elena Pirrone (VAL), were with Holden in the breakaway.

Holden tried to breakaway in the start, but she didn’t succeed. After climbing Oronet, the three riders escaped from the bunch and got a huge gap which reached 4 and a half minutes at its peak. In the last kilometre of the stage Holden attacked, but Salazar caught her and won by a tiny difference.

“We knew it could be a stage for the breakaways, so in the first kilometers I attacked solo. After the only climb of the day, Salazar, Pirrone and myself got a big gap over the bunch. When we were told we had such a big gap we knew it was our chance to fight for the win. I tried to escape from Salazar within the last kilometre, but she caught me in the last metres and took the win. It’s a pity to be so close to the victory, but we are working well and I’m happy we fought at this level. We’re confident we’ll get a UCI win. We’re only in February!” said Lizzie Holden after the stage.
