Holden takes Bizkaia-Durango 2020 first win

2020-07-27

Manx rider Lizzie Holden got her first win of the season at the Trofeo Cendea Galar, a victory which is also the first of the year for Bizkaia-Durango.

The race started with a five-woman breakaway, with Lucía González and Alice Maria Arzuffi from Bizkaia-Durango, as well as Varvara Fasoi (EIC), Ainara Elbusto (CDO) and Claire Steels (SWT). They were later joined by Ariana Gilabert and Holden herself, along with Lija Laizane (EIC).

Within the last 10 kilometers Lizzie Holden attacked and got the win solo. Steels ended up in 2nd place and Elbusto was 3rd.

Lizzie Holden: “It was a very tough race because of the heat, but we did a great job as a team and I think we deserved this victory. Ari was so strong and we worked together really hard to get to the front of the race. Then, when we were there, we had 4 from Bizkaia-Durango and worked together to attack the front group, and finally it paid off! I am very happy for this first win and I hope we will continue to be in the front in the following races.”

Thanks to Holden’s win and Gilabert’s fifth place, Bizkaia-Durango leads both the elite and the U23 Basque Series classifications.
